Assassin of Former Chief Prosecutor Executed

TEHRAN A member of Mujahedeen Khalq Organization (MKO), a terrorist grouplet popularly known as Munafeqin or hypocrites, Ali Asghar Ghazanfarnejad Jolodar, who assassinated former head of Prisons Organization Assadollah Lajevardi was executed at Tehran's Evin Prison Saturday, announced Tehran's Islamic Revolution Court Sunday. He was convicted in connection with the August 23 assassination of former prosecutor Assadollah Lajevardi, who also had been head of Iran's Prisons Organization. Lajevardi, 63, was martyred outside his tailor's shop in Tehran's bazaar on August 23 by the MKO agents while doing his own business.

Two of his companions, Asghar Reiss Esmaili and Zeynolabedin Masoodi were also killed on the same day. The statement said the court sentenced the terrorist to death on charges of making war against the Islamic Republic by supporting the MKO, involvement in the murder and being corrupt on earth. The executed terrorist had defected from military service and fled to Iraq in 1996 where he joined MKO and later returned back to Iran together with another MKO agent in an attempt to harm the Islamic Republic, the statement said.

After assassinating Lajevardi and his two companions, the two terrorists tried to escape the scene but with the interference of the people, one of them committed suicide by swallowing cyanide near the site of the incident. But, the second terrorist who had managed to flee, was later arrested by the Information Ministry personnel, the statement further added.
